Connecting to shared drives

Below are multiple methods for connecting to shared folders. You will need the address of the share before proceeding. Note that Windows network addresses contain backslashes (\), not forward slashes (/). If you are not plugged into the network on campus (i.e. are connecting from home or via wireless) you will need to first connect to ARTS VPN. These folders are manged by the ARTS HelpDeskAdmins (help@arts.ryerson.ca).

Map the share

  1. Start > Right-click Computer > Map Network Drive…
  2. Pick your favourite drive letter
  3. Type in \\server\share (e.g. \\apoc\labshares\folder)**
  4. Reconnect at logon: Check this if you would like the drive to show up every time you login to this computer.
  5. Connect using different credentials: Check this if you are using an ARTS VPN connection. You will be prompted on the next screen for your ARTS username and password.
  6. Click Finish

Connect directly to the share

  1. Start > Run…
  2. Type in \\server\share (e.g. \\apoc\labshares\folder)**
  3. To create a shortcut on your desktop, right click on a folder and choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut)

Browse the network for the share

  1. Start > Computer
  2. Click on Network in the bottom-left of the window
  3. Find the server or computer to which you would like to connect. For most Psychology Lab Shares, this is apoc
  4. Browse to the folder
  5. To create a shortcut on your desktop, right click on a folder and choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut)

>> This method may not work if you do not have sufficient permissions (i.e. you can’t browse to \\server\folder\subfolder if you don’t have access to \\server\folder, though you could map or directly connect to \\server\folder\subfolder)

Connecting from a Mac

  1. Open Finder
  2. Go > Connect to server…
  3. Type in smb://server/share (e.g. smb://apoc/labshares/folder)**
  4. If prompted, select the folder to which you would like to connect
  5. When prompted, type in your ARTS username and password

>> When connecting to a share from a Mac, use forward slashes (/), not backslashes (\).

**If you are having trouble connecting to \\server\share, try connecting to \\server.arts.ryerson.ca\share instead.
