The PGSA is excited to invite you to our 9th Annual Psychology Research Symposium! The event will be held on Friday, October 20th from 12:15pm – 4:30pm in the PRTC (2nd floor SBB). The afternoon is designed to showcase current research being done by graduate students in the program. It’s a great opportunity to share with the department what you’ve been working on as well as get new ideas for future studies. Lunch and snacks will be provided!
We will start the event at 12:15pm sharp, with snacks and opening remarks by the PGSA Exec. This will be followed by a presentation by our guest speaker, Dr. Eric Hehman. His talk will be followed by lab presentations and individual presentations, which will take place in the same room (SBB 238), and lastly the poster session, which will take place in hallway of SBB (second floor). The following is a brief description of what Dr. Hehman will be presenting:
Title: Macro-psychological constructs across regions: Methodological considerations and findings
The era of big data has enabled social scientists to test hypotheses at increasingly broad levels of analysis, such as the community, state/province, and nation. This shift in focus comes with novel methodological considerations. In this talk I’ll examine the relationship between constructs operationalized at the individual and regional levels, and in the context of racial prejudice, discuss several associations uniquely uncovered by regional analyses. Specifically, I’ll describe recent research findings links between regional racial bias with Black and White cardiovascular health, mortality rate, and the likelihood of being killed by police.
Student Presenters:
This year, we will accepting applications for individual oral presentations and posters:
A. The individual presentation should be 15 minutes long, and is followed by a 5-minute question period (PhD1 students, this can be your MA defense presentation). Students who present a talk do NOT need to make a poster. We will select three students to give a talk from those who express interest.
B. For the poster session, there will be prizes for best poster (1st, 2nd and 3rd) that will be awarded by the Awards Committee (which consists of a group of Faculty members from our Department). Ideally, those presenting posters will have previously printed them for past conferences, but for those who have not, the PGSA will help with the cost of poster printing. Also, note that those making a new poster for the symposium can use this poster for any upcoming conferences or presentations, etc.
We hope that all current PhD1 students will present their MA thesis work (or another completed project), either in the form of a talk or poster. Students in other cohorts are also invited to present any research projects that you have already completed. First year students, you are more than welcome to present any research that you did during your undergraduate degrees.
*If you would like to present your work, please email us (pgsa@psych.ryerson.ca) no later than 11:59 pm on Monday, October 3rd.
